Car care tips for safe winter driving

Snow and ice have already caused chaos up and down the UK this winter, with heavy snowfall causing accidents and tailbacks of up to 50 miles on the country's motorways, and drivers warned not to travel at all in some areas. While it's understandable that breakdowns and accidents are more common during spells of wintry weather, there are plenty of steps that can be taken to ensure that your vehicle is as safe as possible to drive during the colder months.

Check before you travel

If a service is due, it's wise to book one in sooner rather than later, so any major problems can be ironed out before travelling in wintry weather. There are also checks that should be done at home before you set off. Testing your brakes to make sure they're in good working order, checking tyre pressure and tread, testing all of your vehicle's electrics - including the battery - and keeping an eye on fluids, making sure the radiator and coolant system are adequately filled and that wiper reservoirs are topped up with a fluid specifically designed for colder temperatures.

Hazards while driving - weather and more

Care should also be taken when driving, as winter weather can create hazards specific to the time of year. Your vehicle should be completely cleared of ice and snow before you set off and extra care is taken when on the road, it's important to use fog lights or dipped headlights during more foggy spells.

In recent weeks, wind speeds have been high, which can make driving more difficult and that can make other road users more of a hazard. Flooding is also commonplace as ice and snow melt, any flooded areas should ideally be avoided, or driven through with high revs in first gear without stopping if you are sure that they are shallow enough to pass.

Finally, sunlight can also cause huge problems during the winter months thanks to its lower position on the horizon, and because of the way it reflects off snow and ice, making glare far more of a hazard - please drive carefully.
